I have been so excited about this movie since I heard that Tim Burton was making it and that Johnny Depp had signed on. Really, once you heard Tim Burton was in, is there really a doubt who would be the leading man? My excitement was solely based on the names attached and the finale of Jersey Girl. I knew nothing of the Sweeney Todd story. Johnny Depp is Benjamin Barker, a barber falsely accused and wrongfully imprisoned in order to separate him from his wife and child. The evil Judge Turpin is played perfectly by Alan Rickman; he is greasy and horrible. Benjamin Barker returns to London after his imprisonment with a new name and a new look (very Edward Scissorhands), and moves in with Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter). Together they find common ground in their squishy morals. I really enjoyed this movie. It was extremely bloody, but it is all presented in such a cartoonish and gleeful way. This is definitely not Disney, folks. Go in prepared for a murderous free for all, set to music, of course. Congratulations to Johnny Depp for his Best Actor Oscar Nomination!
