Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Posted by Amber in Review

I have been so excited about this movie since I heard that Tim Burton was making it and that Johnny Depp had signed on.  Really, once you heard Tim Burton was in, is there really a doubt who would be the leading man?  My excitement was solely based on the names attached and the finale of Jersey Girl.  I knew nothing of the Sweeney Todd story. Johnny Depp is Benjamin Barker, a barber falsely accused and wrongfully imprisoned in order to separate him from his wife and child.  The evil Judge Turpin is played perfectly by Alan Rickman; he is greasy and horrible.  Benjamin Barker returns to London after his imprisonment with a new name and a new look (very Edward Scissorhands), and moves in with Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter).  Together they find common ground in their squishy morals. I really enjoyed this movie.  It was extremely bloody, but it is all presented in such a cartoonish and gleeful way.  This is definitely not Disney, folks.  Go in prepared for a murderous free for all, set to music, of course.   Congratulations to Johnny Depp for his Best Actor Oscar Nomination!

Juno

Posted by Amber in Review

Juno made me so happy.  I wanted to leave the theater and walk right back in to see it again.  And I’m going to spend far too much time talking about how it was perfectly cast. Ellen Page is Juno, a sixteen year old girl who gets pregnant.  The father is her friend Bleeker, portrayed by Michael Cera (of Arrested Development fame). Juno decides that she is going to have the baby and give it up for adoption, and also decides to find the couple in the local penny saver ads. She finds her perfect couple in record time.  Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) and Mark (Jason Bateman) Loring have the perfect house in the perfect suburb and they cannot wait to be parents.  They are from the beginning too good to be true. My favorite thing about the movie is the interaction of Juno with her father and step-mother.  Played by Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons, they have the funniest and the most poignant lines in the whole film.  Juno thinks she needs to find perfection, and I think they make her see that sometimes it doesn’t work that way.  But you can get pretty close. I loved this movie and I loved the music.  It perfectly mirrored the quirky tone of the film, which is what a good soundtrack should do.  It is definitely one of those movies that can make you laugh and cry. Congratulations to Juno on its four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture!

30 Days of Night

This movie was actually pretty good.  I had heard that it was a good movie but for some reason the cast led me to believe otherwise.  Josh Hartnett does a good job in the movie and has made me not think so bad about his movies anymore.”Tucker” (Ben Foster) makes an appearance in the movie, and does very well again.  I think with this movie and 3:10 to Yuma he is due. This movie is a Vampire flick if you didn’t already know and a pretty good one.  They don’t make clear why the things ever come but hey, it was based on a comic and even though I usually don’t like that this one is worth getting.Don’t buy it, it is probably too late to see in theatres, so definately rent.

The Bucket List

These two are the new Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon.  This is not the type of movie I usually watch but, man was this good.  These two are so funny together and it even has some sweet moments. Two dying men decide to make a list of things they want to do before they die, and they do them.  They come up with some cool things and it gets you thinking. See it before it leaves theatres, if not, buy it.

Juno

Eh, If you haven’t seen it then it is worth watching.  If you have to choose between this and something else, choose something else.  This movie can wait.  It is a Napoleon Dynamite type film.  It had good humor but it was just not much of a story, if it weren’t for the quick wit of the characters it would have sucked. The music is ANNOYING.Rent it.

I Am Legend

This was one of my favorite movies of 2007.  The look of new york and the way they show the change of the city is really crazy.  I like how they deliver the pre-story to the  audience. The only downside to the movie was that the “infected” were CGI and not real human actors and extras.  You have a certain feeling about the movie until you start seeing the fake people running around.  Other than that, great movie.  Worth seeing in theatres.

Awake

This movie was really good.  I didn’t see any of it coming until right before it hit.  I guess I am just not as observant as the other writers.  Really good story, cool twists, and even at the slow parts you are interested.Wait and rent.

Halloween

I love Rob Zombie movies. After House of 1000 Corpses he has really gotten good. I like his camera work and choice of music for his films.  He doesn’t take anything away from this movie and actually makes it a little more believable.  Michael Myers is no normal 6ft tall normal built bad guy.  Everything he does in this movie you could actually see him doing to these people.  Unlike the original where this normal looking guy can pick ever person up by their throat and you sit back saying “yeah right”.I like how they added more to his childhood and gave a better look at why he was the way he was.  I actually wish they would have shown more of him as a child.See it in theatres if possible, if not OWN IT.  It will go good with the rest of the collection.  If you like horror, this will fit right in.

No Country for Old Men

I will start out by saying, I hated the ending.Everything about this movie, up until the end, was great. There was plenty of action and many well thought out situations that just kept you on th edge of your seat. The villain of the movie was great, he was one of the craziest looking bad guys I have seen since The Fifth Element. His haircut was probably what made his character. It wouldn’t have been the same without it. His weapon of choice was really creative and his “friendo” phrase was classic.I would consider this a rent, don’t waste the big screen experience on this film.
