Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Posted by Chris in Review

Haha, this is the funniest movie since Superbad.  These guys come up with some of the craziest stuff.  If anyone had this type of humor outside of a movie you probably wouldn’t care for them too much but since it is on the big screen it is hilarious.Just a warning for the guys, there is WAY too much full frontal male nudity in this movie.  It made me uncomfortable a few times.  If you are trying to make it through life without seeing a naked man this isn’t the movie for you.  You would miss out on so much though.Peter takes a vacation to Hawaii after a breakup from his long term girlfriend and end up at the same hotel as her and her new boyfriend.  She is also on a hit tv show so everywhere he goes there is something to remind him of her.Go see this in theatres, I think it is worth the money. No real gain from the theatre but you will laugh the whole time.

Great movie, based on the MIT blackjack team.  Not a lot of actual events are shown in the movie it is mostly all made up but it is still very interesting.I haven’t seen Kevin Spacey in a movie since Superman Returns, and this was a good return movie for him.You don’t get anything extra from seeing this in theatres, so save the $9 and rent it.

Doomsday

The movie was a really good action movie.  This movie is all about the action, if you are not into those classic style action movies you won’t like this.  It is a Mad Max style world with some over the top action sequences.Even if you don’t like this type of movie, Rhona Mitra is well worth sitting through the whole movie for.If you like action go see it, it wouldn’t be the same at home on the couch.  If you just like nice looking ladies kicking ass, wait and rent it.

Sleuth

This movie is about to come to dvd at this point but it was only in theatres for like a week here.Hard to explain the movie.  This is a remake of a 1970’s film.Andrew Wyke (Michael Cain) has lost his wife to a young actor/chauffeur Milo Tindle (Jude Law). Wyke invites Tindle to his house, where Tindle hopes to get Wyke to sign divorce papers.  Wyke has other plans and the movie goes into a series of off the wall events. See this movie, it has some weird twists and even with the overdose of dialogue it is really entertaining.

Atonement

Posted by Amber in Review

Atonement had all of the buzz that accompanies an Oscar season movie.  And I’m glad to report, most of that buzz was well deserved.  The film is quiet, beautiful to look at and at times infuriating in its complication. The film stars Kiera Knightly as Cecilia Tallis and James McAvoy as Robbie Turner.  Robbie works on the Tallis estate and in a moment of boyish foolishness he writes a note to Cecilia that he never intends to send.  But send it is exactly what he does.  Confusing it with the real note, he hands it over to Cecilia’s little sister Briony, played by Saoirse Ronan, who runs off with it and, of course, reads it before turning it over. Now, it’s important to note that Briony has quite an imagination and is also fond of being the center of attention and in control.  She sets off a sequence of events, based purely on her own perception, that she is unable to ever right again.  Robbie is sent off to war and Cecilia turns her back on a family that wouldn’t support her.   The film was very lovely.  In places the pace slowed to a crawl and the story derailed a bit (like during a spectacular ten minute shot, created in one take; gorgeous, but dull), but I believe the feeling you get is the same as when you finish a great novel.  You close the book and take a moment to relive the events and characters.  You just can’t let it go immediately.

There Will Be Blood

Posted by Amber in Review

I had to take time to think about this movie.  I had to see it a second time.  All two hours and forty-eight minutes of it.  I have to say, it is spectacular.  The scope, the scenery, the oil, the testosterone; it all comes together to show what happens when oil gets thrown into the mix. The amazing Daniel Day Lewis is the centerpiece of this movie. He completely inhabits the complicated character of Daniel Plainview, and is accompanied by his small co-star, Dillon Freasier, as his son, H.W. Plainview.  Daniel makes it plain in his first bit of dialogue exactly what he is.  He is an oilman.  That is what he is.  And that is all he will ever be.  Daniel Plainview takes his son to look for oil in Little Boston and begins his takeover of the area on the Sunday ranch.  Here he encounters Eli Sunday (Paul Dano, also playing Paul Sunday), the pastor of the area church, and so meets his arch enemy. The film is about ambition and greed. It’s about what happens when oil meets religion.  It’s about so many things that don’t lend itself to a short review.  Yes, the movie is long and yes, it may not be for everyone.  But everyone, and I truly mean this, should sit through this movie one time.  Everyone should see Daniel Day Lewis play this part.  I didn’t go see the movie a second time because of the storyline, even though it is actually interesting.  I went again to experience particular moments; in one particular scene Daniel is baptized into the church and the scene is so explosive and powerful that I was watching it through my fingers.  There is nothing like the conclusion to this movie.  Perhaps you’ve heard about it.  Daniel Plainview has no problem with drinking your milkshake.

Vantage Point

Posted by Amber in Review

Vantage Point was an interesting movie. Based around a half hour of time, we see a Presidential assassination attempt from several different viewpoints. Each time the film rewinds, we get another perspective and gain more information. It was extremely fast paced and never let me get bored. Dennis Quaid plays Thomas Barnes, a Secret Service agent back on the job after almost a year out of the game. He took a bullet for the President during another assassination attempt and took time out to heal and mentally recover. His first day back on the job and all hell breaks loose.I actually did like it quite a bit. It held my attention and I like watching each piece fall into place. The problem is this movie is not made to be a catalyst for debate on terrorism. You won’t walk away from this movie knowing why. No one starring in it, or involved in making it, cares to tell you why. You just get to watch how and what. So, take the movie for what it is worth. I think most folks will like it too.

Vantage Point

Good Movie. This whole movie is based around about 30 minutes of time.  You see the same 30 minutes over and over again from different points of view until you get the whole story.  I couldn’t remember a movie done like this before but it seemed familiar for some reason. The movie is all about the president being shot at a public appearance and the views of a few witnesses.  They never give you enough information to figure it all out but some things are almost obvious.I can’t really say it is worth seeing in a theatre, I think this is probably more of a rental.  This isn’t something that has to be watched on the big screen. Rent it.

3:10 to Yuma

Posted by Chris in Review

I can’t believe I forgot to review this when it was in theatres. This is a great movie, I have never really been a fan of western movies but this really had me interested.  Ben Foster makes an appearance as a bad mother…  He plays a good bad guy. A injured rancher is having money problems so takes a job transporting a prisoner, played by Russell Crowe, to a train headed for Yuma.  The movie has some of the best western style action. See this if you haven’t and buy it when it is released.
